{"id":739,"date":"2011-02-03T12:19:18","date_gmt":"2011-02-03T12:19:18","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saints-hosting.org.uk\/sadfish\/visitgalicia\/?p=739"},"modified":"2011-02-04T10:33:06","modified_gmt":"2011-02-04T10:33:06","slug":"ribadeo-our-gateway-to-the-coast","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/?p=739","title":{"rendered":"Ribadeo, our gateway to the coast"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As we await a couple of pieces of important news about the house, which I will of course share with you in due course, I thought I&#8217;d blog about <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ribadeo.org\/?lg=ing\">Ribadeo<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Although mentioned previously in passing, I&#8217;ve not focused on our nearest coastal town.<\/p>\n<p>Sitting at the north-east extreme of Galicia, the province of Lugo, and the area of A Mari\u00f1a Oriental it is the hub of the local area and in the 2006 census it had a population of just under 10,000.\u00a0 Slap bang on the coast it is thirty minutes from our house and the gateway to at least half a dozen delightful beaches and coves as well as having a number of good restaurants, and\u00a0a couple of big supermarkets as well as many specialist shops.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[mediaplayer src=&#8217;\/sadfish\/visitgalicia\/\/Ribadeo.wmv&#8217; ]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The main square sits in front of the town hall and while small, it\u00a0is pleasant enough with trees, grassed areas and a small children&#8217;s play park and surrounded by building acts as a summer sun trap. It&#8217;s also on the pilgrim route (Northern Route) so the &#8216;scallop shells&#8217; can be followed, for a short distance at least.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_741\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/RibadeoTownHall.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-741\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-741\" title=\"RibadeoTownHall\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/RibadeoTownHall-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/RibadeoTownHall-300x225.jpg 300w, http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/RibadeoTownHall.jpg 500w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-741\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Town Hall<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Right in front of the town hall is a bust which was donated by the people of Montevideo (Uruguay) in 1957 to celebrate the centenary of the birth of renowned author and poet <a href=\"http:\/\/www.todotango.com\/spanish\/creadores\/semblanza.aspx?id=350&amp;ag=\">&#8216;El Viejo Pancho&#8217; <\/a>(Jos\u00e9 Alonso y Trelles) who was born in Ribadeo (although some contest he was born just over the Asturian border in Castropol, Asturias) before emigrating to South America at the age of seventeen.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_742\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ElViajoPancho.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-742\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-742\" title=\"ElViajoPancho\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ElViajoPancho-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ElViajoPancho-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/ElViajoPancho.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-742\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">El Viejo Pancho<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Ribadeo has an association with the world famous <a href=\"http:\/\/www.sargadelos.com\/?lg=ing\">Sargadelos<\/a>\u00a0ceramics. The founder, Antonio Raimundo Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez (Marqu\u00e9s de Sargadelos), used Ribadeo as his main port for exporting from the manufacturing base in Cervo, Lugo (50km along the coast towards A Coru\u00f1a).\u00a0\u00a0A nice little story until you learn the macabre fact that during the Spanish War of Independence (in 1809) Ib\u00e1\u00f1ez, unfairly accused of collaborating with the French enemy, was assassinated by being dragged through Ribadeo&#8217;s streets behind two horses.<\/p>\n<p>The town has two museums (the San Dami\u00e1n Fort and Casa da R\u00eda, Nature Centre) and nine monuments as well as a pretty little marina where hundreds of white pleasure craft bob about on the Atlantic Ocean.<\/p>\n<p>But saving the best until last, Ribadeo also has a number of good restaurants to tickle your taste buds. The best of\u00a0these, despite its appearance, always has a queue for tables and serves a selection of freshly caught and traditionally cooked seafood.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_743\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Pulperia.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-743\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-743\" title=\"Pulperia\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Pulperia-225x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Pulperia-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/02\/Pulperia.jpg 375w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-743\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Casa Villaronto<\/p><\/div>\n<p>We ate here with Ramon the night before we finally bought our house, and the\u00a0pulpo (octopus) and chipirones (squid) were exquisite\u00a0and washed down with local white wine served in small ceramic bowls from a ceramic pitcher (you&#8217;re right, they could have been serving us anything).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>As we await a couple of pieces of important news about the house, which I will of course share with you in due course, I thought I&#8217;d blog about Ribadeo.
