{"id":901,"date":"2011-04-21T11:01:29","date_gmt":"2011-04-21T11:01:29","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saints-hosting.org.uk\/sadfish\/visitgalicia\/?p=901"},"modified":"2011-04-21T11:05:47","modified_gmt":"2011-04-21T11:05:47","slug":"spain-appears-to-be-shut","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/?p=901","title":{"rendered":"Spain appears to be shut"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>As the clock hit six in Galicia last night, five o&#8217;clock here in the UK, my mailbox was once again full to overflowing with Spanish e-mails.<\/p>\n<p>It was like Christmas Eve, not for their contents but because their\u00a0despatchers were trying to get them out of their minds and consciences so that they could mentally shut down for the start of <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Holy_Week_in_Spain\">Semana Santa<\/a> (Holy Week)\u00a0with the first celebration of maundy thursday.<\/p>\n<p>One of them was from our solicitor Inma and contained scans of the registration document from the Catastro (Cadastre). This has\u00a0a small error on it, allocating a piece of land that we own to someone that we&#8217;ve never heard of nor ever seen mentioned in any previous documentation. It&#8217;s not a show stopper, but a small worry, so we responded this morning with an attached\u00a0read receipt. BUnsurprisingly\u00a0it has not been acknowledged.<\/p>\n<p>If you can&#8217;t beat them, join them (I&#8217;ve already mentally packed my bags for home).<\/p>\n<p>As a devoutly Catholic country (although increasingly less so) it is no surprise that Easter gets\u00a0the full treatment of bank holidays,\u00a0feasts, processions and all kinds of other goodies. The only places open will be the bars, cafes\u00a0and restaurants.<\/p>\n<p>When we were in Santiago de Compostela at this time last year we happened upon a procession similar to those happening all over Galicia and indeed Spain,\u00a0last night, tonight and on sunday.\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_903\" style=\"width: 221px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/procession.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-903\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-903\" title=\"procession\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/procession-211x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"211\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/procession-211x300.jpg 211w, http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/04\/procession.jpg 400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 211px) 100vw, 211px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-903\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">One of many processions<\/p><\/div>\n<p>The first thoughts of a non-Spaniard when seeing the ceremonial robes, with their pointed hats (<a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Capirote\">Capirote<\/a>),\u00a0is to draw a parallel with the heinous KKK (a most anti-Catholic organisation). This couldn&#8217;t be further from the truth.\u00a0These hats are designed\u00a0to hide the faces of the wearer for humilities sake and as a penance, but historically were also worn by those found guilty during the Spanish Inquisition\u00a0to humiliate the wearer.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">[mediaplayer src=&#8217;\/sadfish\/visitgalicia\/\/0010.wmv&#8217; ]<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Hopefully our e-mails will get a response next week, at least the Spanish won&#8217;t be taking the day off\u00a0for the royal wedding!
