{"id":952,"date":"2011-06-06T07:00:12","date_gmt":"2011-06-06T07:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saints-hosting.org.uk\/sadfish\/visitgalicia\/?p=952"},"modified":"2011-06-01T08:02:10","modified_gmt":"2011-06-01T08:02:10","slug":"percebes-food-of-the-gods","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/?p=952","title":{"rendered":"Percebes: Food of the gods"},"content":{"rendered":"<p style=\"text-align: left;\">In Greek mythology <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ambrosia\">ambrosia<\/a>\u00a0is the food of the gods, up there alongside nectar as the most heavenly of consumables. In Galicia the ambrosia equivalents\u00a0are percebes, or as the English would call them, <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Goose_barnacle\">goose neck barnacles<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Despite their unappealing, frankly ugly,\u00a0appearance and the finger numbing method of consumption, these tiny morsels of\u00a0pure undistilled rugged coastline are as delicious as they are dangerous to harvest from the\u00a0wave crashed cliffs of the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.costadelamuerte.com\/\">costa da morte<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">I was introduced to percebes by none other that Jeremy Clarkson, not personally, but through a TV programme which showed him being winched down the Galician cliffs in a wet suit clutching a small net and a rock hammer. When he&#8217;d been battered by the Atlantic waves and clambered back to safety he cooked up a handful of percebes on a <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Primus_stove\">primus stove<\/a> and\u00a0waxing lyrical.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">What really puts you off is the price, these things can command an outlay of up to 100\u20ac per kg, so they are not something that you&#8217;d eat on a daily basis. On an early trip to Santiago\u00a0de Compostela I tried 10\u20ac worth in a restaurant near the cathedral and was instantly\u00a0hooked.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">When we went out to Galicia\u00a0in May\u00a0we were recommended (<a href=\"http:\/\/www.granerodelburro.com\/\">thanks Stephen &amp; Kay<\/a>) a restaurant in Rinlo (ten minutes west of Ribadeo) called &#8216;A Confrad\u00eda&#8217; and on being seated we were brought a plate of percebes &#8216;on the house&#8217; while we waited for our main course to be cooked (more of that in a later blog). They aren&#8217;t the easiest food in the world to eat and you have to put in quite a bit of work for the reward.
