{"id":1039,"date":"2011-07-05T13:06:39","date_gmt":"2011-07-05T13:06:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.saints-hosting.org.uk\/sadfish\/visitgalicia\/?p=1039"},"modified":"2011-07-05T13:07:33","modified_gmt":"2011-07-05T13:07:33","slug":"pontenova-and-its-puente-nuevo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/?p=1039","title":{"rendered":"Pontenova and its puente nuevo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>It shows the depths to which we&#8217;ve sunk when we treat a new bridge as a <a href=\"http:\/\/www.touropia.com\/most-famous-bridges-in-the-world\/\">tourist attraction<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>If it was the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Golden_Gate_Bridge\">Golden Gate Bridge<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Ponte_Vecchio\">Ponte Vecchio<\/a>\u00a0or the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.humberbridge.co.uk\/\">Humber Bridge<\/a>\u00a0then we could be excused, but not when it is\u00a0the new bridge in A Pontenova. You remember, the one that caused so much controversy six months ago, and which is still upsetting the locals.<\/p>\n<p>What used to be the main bridge across the River Eo, which splits the town in two,\u00a0was just about wide enough\u00a0to convey\u00a0two cars.\u00a0On the eastern side of the bridge was the main car parking area for those doing shopping on the western side.<\/p>\n<p>In their wisdom the local council, and Galician government, decided to build a new bridge about 500m upstream, demolish the existing road bridge and erect a new footbridge.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1041\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge1.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1041\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1041\" title=\"newbridge1\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge1-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge1-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge1.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1041\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">No longer a vehicle crossing<\/p><\/div>\n<p>\u00a0<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1042\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge3.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1042\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1042\" title=\"newbridge3\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge3-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge3-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge3.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1042\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Much prettier than the old road bridge<\/p><\/div>\n<p>But the locals are far from happy. They can no longer drive over the bridge to the parking without making\u00a0a 1 km diversion, and they have now decided that the new road bridge (see below) was only built as a local and unfair tax generation mechanism.<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_1043\" style=\"width: 310px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge2.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-1043\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-1043\" title=\"newbridge2\" src=\"http:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge2-300x225.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"300\" height=\"225\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge2-300x225.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.visitgalicia.co.uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/2011\/07\/newbridge2.jpg 600w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 300px) 100vw, 300px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-1043\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">New road bridge in the distance with landscaping <\/p><\/div>\n<p>The road layout is classed locally as\u00a0excessively complicated for those wishing to drive to the other half of the town, and with so many &#8216;STOP&#8217; signs (which the Spanish love to ignore) and\u00a0a permanently placed &#8216;camouflaged&#8217; police van parked near the bridge handing out on-the-spot fines for those who fail to obey. Once again their is uproar, with the finger of blame being pointed directly at the embattled\u00a0mayor.<\/p>\n<p>So it was with great trepidation that we negotiated the bridge, at least half a dozen times, on our last visit.<\/p>\n<p>Do you know what? There are a couple of &#8216;give ways&#8217; marked on the roads, and no sign of undercover police anywhere. We escaped fine-free. Perhaps it is the case that in Spain the\u00a0STOP signs are considered an irrelevance,\u00a0or perhaps\u00a0the Spanish just <a href=\"http:\/\/www.tumbit.com\/blogs\/1276-spanish-road-safety.html\">aren&#8217;t brilliant drivers<\/a>?<\/p>\n<p>One thing is for sure, I&#8217;d never want to drive any distance on a Spanish Fiesta weekend!<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>It shows the depths to which we&#8217;ve sunk when we treat a new bridge as a tourist attraction.
